Lane's career began to take shape in the mid-1970s, after she began recording for her husband's label. Her first single, "Try to Forget About You" and "Sweet Deceiver", was released in 1977, followed by "Let Me Down Easy", her first big hit, at the end of the year. After reaching the Top 10 and 20 for country titles, she signed with United Artists Records, and had her greatest success with "One Day at a Time", a gospel song, reaching number 1 on the Country chart.
