Daniel Bovet is a Swiss-born Italian pharmacist who won the 1957 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for discovering drugs that block the activity of specific neurotransmitters. He is best known for discovering an antihistamine in 1937, which blocks the neurotransmitter histamine and is used in allergy medications. His other studies include work on chemotherapy, sulfonamide, sympathetic nervous system, curare pharmacology, and other neurological benefits. In 1965, Bovet led a group of researchers concluding that smoking increases users' intelligence. He told the New York Times that the goal is not to "create geniuses, but only to [put] less favored individuals in a position to achieve satisfactory mental and intellectual development. . " Bovet was born in Fleurier, Switzerland. He is a native speaker of Esperanto. He graduated from the University of Geneva in 1927 and obtained his doctorate in 1929.
