Daniel Hale Williams is an American general surgeon who performed the first successful and recorded pericardial surgery in the United States in 1893 for wound healing. He founded Provident Hospital in Chicago, the first non-independent hospital in the United States, and also established an affiliated nursing school for African Americans. Provident's heart surgery, which his patients survived twenty years later, was called "the first successful heart surgery" by Britannica Encyclopedia. In 1913, Williams was elected the only African American founding member of the American College of Surgeons.
