Domenico Cimarosa
Domenico Cimarosa is an Italian composer from the Neapolitan and classical period. He has written over eighty operas, the most famous of which is Il matrimonio segreto; most of his operas are comedies. He also wrote works of musical instruments and church music. Cimarosa is primarily based in Naples, but has spent part of his career in many other parts of Italy writing for operas in Rome, Venice, Florence and elsewhere. He was hired by Russian Empress Catherine the Great as a composer and court conductor from 1787 to 1791. During his final years, returning to Naples, he supported the losing side in its struggle to overthrow the regime. The monarchy stayed there, and was arrested and then exiled. . He died in Venice at the age of 51.
