Edgar Martínez, nicknamed "Gar" and "Papi", is a former Puerto Rican professional baseball player and coach. He played in Major League Baseball as the Seattle Mariners 'designated hitter and third hitter between 1987 and 2004. He served as the Mariners' batting coach from 2015 to 2018. Martínez grew up in Dorado, Puerto Rico. Unappreciated as a prospect, he signed for the Mariners as a free agent in 1982, and received a small contract bonus. He made his major league debut in 1987, but didn't become a full-time player until 1990, at the age of 27. In the 1995 American League Division series, he hit "The Double", winning the franchise. and increased public support. to the Mariners baseball team as they try to sponsor a new stadium. He continued to play until 2004, when an injury forced him to retire. Martínez has been seven times the MLB All-Star Champion, five times the Silver Skater and two times a batting champion.
