Ellen Thomas is an American peace activist. She first took part in the White House Peace Watch Ceremony on April 13, 1984. The daughter of an American sailor, Thomas was born in Brooklyn and raised in California. She opposed nuclear weapons as a child. In protest to US government policies, she became tax resistant by simply living below the income tax threshold. On May 6, 1984, Ellen Benjamin married Thomas in a Quaker marriage to become Ellen Thomas. Thomas and her husband protested together for several years, until he died in January 2009 of lung disease. Ellen also leads the Proposition A Non-Radioactive Nuclear Assessment, a mobile multimedia convoy that educates the public about the dangers of a nuclear future. In 1993, she helped coordinate a successful voting initiative in Washington DC on nuclear disarmament and economic transformation.
