Erich Dagobert von Drygalski was a German geographer, geophysicist and polar scientist, born in Königsberg, then in Prussia. From 1882 to 1887 Drygalski studied mathematics and natural sciences at the universities of Königsberg, Bonn, Berlin and Leipzig. He obtained his doctorate on ice shields in the northern regions. From 1888 to 1891, he was an assistant at the Institute of Geodesic and at the Central Office of International Geodesic in Berlin. Drygalski led two expeditions between 1891 and 1893, provided by the Geosciences Association in Berlin. An expedition wintered from 1892 to 1893 in West Greenland. He meets the 1889 standard for geography and geophysics with collected scientific evidence. In 1898 Drygalski became associate professor and 1899 extraordinary professor of geography and geophysics in Berlin.
