David Alexander Johnston is an American volcanologist with the US Geological Survey who died from the eruption of Mount St. Helens 1980 in the US state of Washington. A senior scientist on the USGS Surveillance Team, Johnston was killed in the eruption while holding an observation post six miles away on the morning of May 18, 1980. He was the first to report the eruption, transmitting “Vancouver! Vancouver! That's it! "Before it was swept away by a side explosion. Despite a thorough search, Johnston's body was never found, but highway personnel discovered the remains of his USGS rickshaw in 1993. Johnston's career took over. he travels throughout the United States, where he studies the Augustine volcano in Alaska, the San Juan volcanic field in Colorado, and the long-extinct volcano in Michigan. Johnston is a talented and meticulous scientist best known for his analysis of volcanic gases and their relationship to eruptions.
