Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak
Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak is an Indian scholar, literary theorist and feminist critic. She is a professor at Columbia University and a founding member of the institution's Institute for Comparative Literature and Society. Considered one of the most influential postcolonial intellectuals, Spivak is best known for his essay "Can Subalterns Speak?" and for its translation and introduction to the book De la contextatologie by Jacques Derrida. She also translates works by Mahasweta Devi such as Fantasy Maps and Breast Stories into English and with a distinct critical appreciation of Devi's texts as well as life and writing style in general. Spivak received the Kyoto 2012 Prize for Art and Philosophy for being "a critical theorist and educator on humanity against intellectual colonialism in relation to the globalized world". In 2013, she received the Padma Bhushan, the third noble civil honor awarded by the Republic of India.
