Georges Bizet, born Alexandre César Léopold Bizet, is a French composer of the Romantic period. Best known for his opera career interrupted by his untimely death, Bizet enjoyed some success before his latest work, Carmen, became one of the most famous, well-known and performed in the entire opera repertoire. During his brilliant student career at the Paris Conservatory, Bizet won numerous awards, including the prestigious Prix de Rome in 1857. He was recognized as an outstanding pianist, although he chose not to use this skill and performed rarely in public. Back in Paris after almost three years in Italy, he found that the main Parisian opera houses preferred the established classical repertoire to the works of newcomers. His keyboard and orchestral works are also largely neglected; as a result, his career was delayed and he made a living mainly by arranging and translating other people's music.
