On 17 February 2017, Tahir became the fastest South African to reach 50 T20I counters. On March 4, 2017, during a match against New Zealand, he recorded the cheapest numbers for a South African spinner in the ODI, with 2 spins for 14 runs from 10 revs. On 3 October 2018, he became the fourth bowler from South Africa to score an ODI hat-trick. In March 2019, he announced that he would be leaving the ODI cricket after the 2019 World Cup Cricket. He represented his eighth county club when he joined Surrey in 2019, setting a new record.
