John Steuart Curry
John Steuart Curry was an American painter whose career lasted from 1924 until his death. He is known for his paintings depicting rural life in the state of Kansas, his hometown. Along with Thomas Hart Benton and Grant Wood, he was hailed as one of the three great painters of American regionalism in the first half of the twentieth century. Curry's artistic products are diverse, including paintings, book illustrations, prints and posters. Curry is Kansas' best-known artist, but his work is not popular with Kansas residents, who feel he does not portray the state in a positive way. Curry's paintings often depict farm and animal life, tornadoes, prairie fires, and severe Kansas bleeding - subjects the people of Kansas did not want to represent the state. Curry was commissioned to draw the murals for the Kansas State Capitol, and he completed two works: Pastoral Kansas, and his most famous and controversial work, Tragic Prelude, which he considered to be the greatest.
