Deputy Admiral of the Corps of the Public Health Services Commission, she was the second woman, the second of color, and the first African woman. Americans are general surgeons. Elders are well known for their candid discussion on controversial issues such as drug legalization, masturbation and contraceptive distribution in schools. She was forced to resign in December 1994 amid controversy over her views. She is currently Professor Emeritus of Pediatrics in Medical Science at the University of Arkansas.
