Lev Nikolayevich Oborin is a Soviet and Russian pianist, composer and educator. He was the winner of the first international Chopin piano competition in 1927. His family moved frequently during his childhood. When they settled in Moscow in 1914, he was sent to the music school. He studied with Elena Gnesina, a disciple of Ferruccio Busoni. At the same time, he studied composition with Alexander Gretchaninov and obtained admirable results. In 1921, Oborin was admitted to the Moscow Conservatory of Music as a student of piano and composition. He finished his piano lessons in 1926. The same year, news arrived in Moscow of the first Frederic Chopin International Piano Competition, held in Warsaw in 1927, and his piano teacher Konstantin Igumnov immediately thought of him. After winning first place in the competition, he gave concerts in Poland and Germany. Until 1945 he performed exclusively in Russia and simultaneously lectured at the Moscow Conservatory of Music.
