Mae Jones Street Kidd was a talented American businesswoman, civil leader, and politician at a time when her racial and sexual background was difficult to achieve today. She had an outstanding career in public relations, served in the Red Cross during World War II, and was a member of the Kentucky House of Representatives from 1968 to 1984, representing the Legislative District. 41st State of Louisville. During her elected term, she was known for funding a landmark act. Prop 27, which became law in 1972, created the Kentucky Housing Corporation, the company that promotes and sponsors social housing in the state. In 1974, this bill was formally known as the "Mae Street Kidd Act". Kidd also led the campaign for Kentucky to ratify the 13th Amendment, the 14th Amendment and the 15th Amendment to the US Constitution.
