Beginning her career in regional cinema, she became an actress of Hindi cinema in the late 1950s, 1960s and early 1970s. In a career spanning four decades, Sinha became famous. with Pyaasa de Guru Dutt and Dhool Ka Phool by Yash Chopra. She went on to star in over a hundred films, including Phir Subah Hogi, Hariyali Aur Rasta, Anpadh, Dil Tera Deewana, Gumrah, Bahurani, Jahan Ara, Himalay Ki God Mein, Ankhen, Do Kaliyaan and Maryada. She is known as "the daring diva" and "the torchbearer of female cinema" for presenting powerful and unique female roles in a series of films considered to be a precedent. After receiving numerous awards and nominations, she received the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 2018
