Marcus Mosiah Garvey Sr. is a Jamaican political activist, publisher, journalist, businessman and speaker. He is the founder and first president of the Global Association for the Improvement of Blacks and the Federation of African Communities, through which he proclaims himself the interim president of Africa. According to black nationalism and ideological Lien Phiist, his ideas are called Garveyism. Garvey was born into a fairly wealthy African-Jamaican family in Saint Ann Bay, Jamaica, and learned to print as a teenager. Working in Kingston, he became involved in trade unionism before spending short stays in Costa Rica, Panama and England. Back in Jamaica, he founded UNIA in 1914. In 1916, he moved to the United States and created the UNIA branch in the Harlem district of New York. Emphasizing the unity between Africans and the African American community, he campaigned to end European colonialism across Africa and to unify politics on the continent.
