She is best known for her role as Loretta Haggers in the Mary Hartman television series, Mary Hartman, a role that earned her the 1977 Primetime Emmy Award for Best Supporting Actress - Comedy Series. She has appeared in numerous films including Private Benjamin, The Big Chill, Captain Ron and the 1997 television series The Rainmaker by Francis Ford Coppola. Place also recorded three studio albums for Columbia Records, one of Haggers' albums, including the Top Ten country hit "Baby Boy." With her performance in Diane, Place won the Los Angeles Film Critics Association Award for Best Actress and the National Film Critics Association Award for Best Actress.
