Michael Winston Melvill is a world record pilot and one of the test pilots for SpaceShipOne, a test aircraft developed by Scaled Composites. Melvill flew the SpaceShipOne on its first flight over the limits of space, Flight 15P, on June 21, 2004, becoming the first commercial astronaut and the 435th person to enter space. He was also a pilot on flight 16P for SpaceShipOne, the first competitive flight in the Ansari X. Prize competition.
