Oliver Hazard Perry is a commander in the United States Navy, born in South Kingstown, Rhode Island. As the most famous and prominent member of the Perry family naval dynasty, he is the son of Sarah Wallace Alexander and US Navy Captain Christopher Raymond Perry, and the brother of Commodore Matthew C. Perry. Perry served in the West Indies during the Near War of 1798 to 1800 against France, in the Mediterranean during the Barbary War of 1801 to 1815, and in the Caribbean against piracy and the slave trade, but he was best known for his role . the War of 1812 at the Battle of Lake Erie in 1813. During the War with Britain, Perry oversaw the construction of a fleet in Erie, Pennsylvania.
