Princess Margaret, Countess Snowdon, is the youngest daughter of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, and the only sister of Queen Elizabeth II. She spent most of her childhood with her parents and sister. Her life changed dramatically at the age of 6, when her biological uncle, King Edward VIII, abdicated to marry Wallis Simpson and divorced. Margaret's father becomes king and her sister becomes the obvious heir, with the second Margaret taking the throne. During World War II, the sisters remained at Windsor Castle despite proposals to evacuate them to Canada. During the war years, Margaret was considered too young to carry out official duties and instead continued to go to school. After the war, Margaret fell in love with the Group's Captain Peter Townsend. In 1952, his father died, his sister became queen, and Townsend divorced his wife, Rosemary. He proposed to Margaret early next year.
