World champion in 2001, Stevenson won her country's first Olympic bronze medal in taekwondo, a bronze medal at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, her third Olympic competition for the United Kingdom. Disqualified before the medal round, she recovered from the appeal and won the final bronze medal. Stevenson became world champion again in 2011, despite losing both parents to cancer the year before.
