Sydney Taylor is an American author. She was born Sarah Brenner in New York to Jewish immigrant parents. Her parents and sister Ella immigrated to the United States in 1900 and settled on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, as well as many other Jewish families. His stories are based on life in his extended family that is told in a set of five books called The Kind Family series. "In the second half of the twentieth century [the books in the series] were the best known books about American Jewish children." Her summers have been spent as a consultant and administrator at Cejwin's camps in Port Jervis, New York, where she is known as "Aunt Syd". Some of his siblings were also involved in the camp. She shared her family and stories with post-World War II children, who mostly belonged to second and third generation Jewish families. She died of cancer at the age of 73. Her husband, Ralph, founded the Taylor Book Prize in Sydney in her honor.
