Pascal-Emmanuel Sinamoyi Tabu, better known as Tabu Ley Rochereau, is a leading African rumba singer and songwriter from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. He is the leader of the Afrisa International Orchestra, as well as one of Africa's most influential singers and music composers. Along with guitarist Dr. Nico Kasanda, Tabu Ley pioneered soul and the internationalization of his music by combining elements of Congolese folk music with Cuban, Caribbean and Latin American rumba. He is described as "the character of the Congo, along with Mobutu, marked the history of Africa in the twentieth century". He has been dubbed the "African Elvis" by the Los Angeles Times. After the collapse of the Mobutu regime, Tabu Ley also pursued a political career. His musical career has been spent alongside other major Congolese rhumba groups and his rival Franco Luambo Makiadi, who led the group TPOK Jazz throughout the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. Tabu Ley composed 3,000 songs and produced 250 albums.
