Thomas Edison Alston was the first Major League baseball player to be basketball, who played for the St. Louis Cardinals from 1954 to 1957, was the first African American to do so. A native of Greensboro, North Carolina, he was 6 feet 5 inches tall and weighed 210 pounds. On January 26, 1954, team president Gussie Busch told manager Eddie Stanky to find a black player. The move to Milwaukee, which has sold more beer to African Americans than any other brewery, has raised fears of the impact of a boycott. However, Busch was a bit disappointed at Alston. When he reported to the Cardinal, the team learned he was two years older than Padres claimed.
