William James is an American philosopher, historian and psychologist, and the first educator to offer a psychology course in the United States. James is considered one of the leading thinkers of the late 19th century, one of the most influential philosophers in America, and the "father of American psychology". Together with Charles Sanders Peirce, James created the school of philosophy known as pragmatism and is also regarded as one of the founders of functional psychology. The Journal of General Psychological Analysis, published in 2002, ranked James as the 14th most prominent psychologist of the 20th century. A survey published in the American Psychologist in 1991 classified James. De James was in second place, behind Wilhelm Wundt, who is widely regarded as the founder of experimental psychology. James also developed a philosophical view called radical empiricism.
