Aziz El-Shawan war einer der bedeutendsten ägyptischen Komponisten des 20. Jahrhunderts. Er absolvierte seine Primar- und Sekundarausbildung am St. Joseph – La Salle College in Khoronfish, Kairo, wo er auch ein Higher Diplom in Commercial Studies erhielt. Er studierte privat Violine bei dem Deutschen Joseph von Aubervon, einem Schüler von Jan Kubelick, und trat dem Schulchor und der Kapelle bei, wo er Klarinette und Waldhorn spielte. Sein Geigenlehrer verschaffte ihm ein Stipendium für ein Studium am Berliner Konservatorium, sein Vater widersprach jedoch seinem Interesse an einer musikalischen Karriere. Ein Unfall behinderte einen Finger seiner linken Hand und zwang ihn, seinen Traum, Geigervirtuose zu werden, aufzugeben. Anschließend studierte er Klavier, Theorie, Harmonielehre, Komposition und Orchestrierung bei dem Italiener Menato und dem Russen Orlovitsky, die Teil einer Gemeinschaft europäischer Musiker und Musiklehrer waren, die im kosmopolitischen Kairo lebten und arbeiteten.
