William John Evans ist ein amerikanischer Jazzpianist und Komponist, der hauptsächlich im Trio auftritt. Seine Verwendung impressionistischer Harmonien, kreativer Interpretationen des traditionellen Jazzrepertoires, Akkordakkorde und „gesungener“ Melodielinien unabhängig von der rhythmischen Marke beeinflussen den Jazzpianisten von heute weiterhin. Er wurde 1929 in Plainfield, New Jersey, geboren und erhielt eine klassische Ausbildung an der University of Southeast Louisiana und der Mannes School of Music in New York, wo er Komposition studierte und ein Künstlerdiplom erhielt. 1955 zog er nach New York, wo er mit der Gruppe und dem Theoretiker George Russell zusammenarbeitete. 1958 schloss sich Evans der Gruppe von Miles Davis an, der 1959 in den rhythmischen Jazz eintauchte und Kind of Blue, das meistverkaufte Jazz-Album aller Zeiten, aufnahm. Inzwischen spielte Evans auch mit Chet Baker für das Album Chet.
