Francis Thompson ist ein englischer Dichter und ein katholischer Mystiker. Auf Wunsch seines Vaters, eines Arztes, begann er mit 18 Jahren das Medizinstudium, aber mit 26 verließ er sein Zuhause, um seinen Talenten als Schriftsteller und Dichter nachzugehen. Er verbrachte drei Jahre auf den Straßen Londons, durch harte Arbeit, und wurde süchtig nach dem Opium, das er einnahm, um seine psychischen Probleme zu lindern. 1888 las ein Ehepaar, der Verleger, seine Gedichte und nahm sie für eine Weile mit nach Hause. Sie veröffentlichten 1893 seine ersten Gedichte. 1897 begann er, Prosa zu schreiben, inspiriert vom Landleben in Wales und Storrington. Sein immer noch schwacher Gesundheitszustand verschlechterte sich weiter und er starb 1907 an Tuberkulose. Zu dieser Zeit veröffentlichte er drei Gedichtbände sowie weitere Bücher und Aufsätze.
