Francis Thompson
Francis Thompson is an English poet and a Catholic mystic. At the request of his father, a doctor, he entered medical school at 18, but at 26 he left home to pursue his talents as a writer and poet. He spent three years on the streets of London, through hard labor, becoming addicted to the opium he was taking to alleviate his mental problems. In 1888, a couple, the publisher, read his poetry and took it home for a while. They published his first Poems in 1893. In 1897 he began writing prose, inspired by country life in Wales and Storrington. His still weak health continued to deteriorate and he died of tuberculosis in 1907. At this time he published three volumes of poetry, as well as other books and essays.
