Ian Gillan ist ein englischer Sänger und Songwriter. Er ist Leadsänger und Texter der Rockband Deep Purple und ist bekannt für seinen kraftvollen Gesang und seine breite Stimmbandbreite, insbesondere für seine hohe Banshee. Ursprünglich von Elvis Presley beeinflusst, begann Gillan Mitte der 1960er Jahre mit mehreren lokalen Bands und schloss sich schließlich Episode Six an, als ihr ursprünglicher Sänger ging. Er erzielte erstmals großen kommerziellen Erfolg, nachdem er 1969 zu Deep Purple kam. Im Juni 1973 trat er aus der Gruppe aus, nachdem er ihren Manager lange Zeit benachrichtigt hatte. Nachdem er die Musikwelt kurzzeitig verlassen hatte, setzte er seine musikalische Karriere mit den Sologruppen Ian Gillan Band und Gillan fort, ein Jahr im Voraus als Leadsänger von Black Sabbath im Jahr 1983. Im folgenden Jahr reformierten Deep Purple und zwei weitere Tracks. Alben folgten, bevor er 1989 verließ. 1993 kehrte er zur Band zurück und ist seitdem ihr Hauptsänger.
