John Harold Hewitt, geboren in Belfast, Nordirland, ist Belfasts bedeutendster Dichter vor einer Generation nordirischer Dichter der 1960er Jahre, darunter Seamus Heaney, Derek Mahon und Michael Longley. 1976 wurde er zum ersten Autor an Bord der Queen's University Belfast ernannt. Zu seinen Sammlungen gehören The Day of the Corncrake und Out of My Time: Poems 1969 bis 1974. 1983 wurde er auch zum Freeman of the City of Belfast ernannt und erhielt die Ehrendoktorwürde von der University of Ulster und dem Queen's College Belfast. Von November 1930 bis 1957 hatte Hewitt Positionen im Belfast Museum & Art Gallery inne.
