Clive Campbell, besser bekannt unter seinem Künstlernamen DJ Kool Herc, ist ein jamaikanisch-amerikanischer DJ, der in den 1970er Jahren durch seinen "Back to School Jam" Hip-Hop-Musik in der Bronx, New York City, hervorgebracht hat 11, 1973, 1520 Sedgwick Avenue. Nachdem seine jüngere Schwester Cindy Campbell inspiriert wurde, zusätzliches Geld für Schulkleidung zu verdienen, beschloss sie, ihren älteren Bruder, der damals 18 Jahre alt war, in ihrem Wohnhaus Musik für die Nachbarschaft spielen zu lassen. Bekannt als "Gründer des Hip-Hop" und "Vater des Hip-Hop", begann Campbell, harte Funkplatten zu spielen, wie sie von James Brown typisch sind. Campbell begann, den instrumentalen Teil der Platte zu isolieren, der den Schlagzeugbeat betonte – den „Break“ – und wechselte von einem Break zum anderen.
