Paul Keres ist ein estnisch-sowjetischer Schachautor und Schachspieler. Von Mitte der 1930er bis Mitte der 1960er Jahre war er einer der besten Fußballer der Welt und 1950 verlieh die FIDE den Titel des Großmeisters der Welt auf seiner Eröffnungsliste. Keres hätte in einem fünfmaligen WM-Match fast eine Chance verpasst. Er gewann das AVRO-Turnier 1938, was zu Verhandlungen um einen Titelkampf mit Meister Alexander Aljechin führte, der jedoch aufgrund des Zweiten Weltkriegs nie ausgetragen wurde. Nach dem Krieg hatte Keres in der Candidate League viermal in Folge das Finale erreicht. Aufgrund dieser und anderer solider Ergebnisse halten viele Schachhistoriker Keres für einen der größten Spieler der Geschichte und den stärksten Spieler, der jemals Weltmeister wurde. Er wurde "Paul De Nhi", "The Second Everlasting" und "The Prince of Chess" genannt.
