Paul Keres
Paul Keres is an Estonian-Soviet chess writer and chess player. He was one of the best footballers in the world from the mid-1930s to the mid-1960s and in 1950, FIDE awarded the title of Grand Grandmaster of the World on his opening list. Keres almost missed a chance in a five-time World Championship match. He won the AVRO tournament in 1938, which led to negotiations for a title match with champion Alexander Alekhine, but the match never took place due to World War II. After the war, Keres had reached the final four times in a row in the Candidate League. For these and other solid results, many chess historians consider Keres to be one of the greatest players in history and the strongest player ever to become a world champion. He was nicknamed "Paul De Nhi", "The Second Everlasting" and "The Prince of Chess". Keres, Viktor Korchnoi and Alexander Beliavsky have beaten nine world champions - more than anyone in history.
