Salmon Portland Chase ist ein US-amerikanischer Politiker und Jurist, der als sechster Richter der Vereinigten Staaten diente. Er ist auch der 23. Gouverneur von Ohio, der Ohio im US-Senat vertritt, und der 25. Sekretär des US-Finanzministeriums. Chase war damit einer der wenigen amerikanischen Politiker, die in allen drei Teilen der Bundesregierung gedient haben. Chase wurde in Cornish, New Hampshire, geboren und studierte Rechtswissenschaften bei Generalstaatsanwalt William Wirt, bevor er sich als Anwalt in Cincinnati niederließ. Er wurde ein Aktivist gegen die Sklaverei und verteidigte oft Sklaven, die vor Gericht flohen. Chase verließ die Whig Party im Jahr 1841, um der Führer der Ohio Liberal Party zu werden. 1848 half er bei der Gründung der Free Land Party und rekrutierte den ehemaligen Präsidenten Martin Van Buren als Präsidentschaftskandidaten der Partei. Chase gewann die Senatswahlen im folgenden Jahr und lehnte den Kompromiss von 1850 und das Gesetz von Kansas-Nebraska ab.
