Salmon P. Chase
Salmon Portland Chase è un politico e giurista americano che è stato il sesto giudice degli Stati Uniti. È anche il 23° Governatore dell'Ohio, che rappresenta l'Ohio al Senato degli Stati Uniti, e il 25° Segretario del Tesoro degli Stati Uniti. Chase è stato quindi uno dei pochi politici americani ad aver prestato servizio in tutti e tre i rami del governo federale. Nato a Cornish, nel New Hampshire, Chase ha studiato legge con il procuratore generale William Wirt prima di stabilirsi nella pratica legale a Cincinnati. Divenne un attivista contro la schiavitù e spesso difese gli schiavi fuggiti in tribunale. Chase lasciò il Whig Party nel 1841 per diventare il leader del Partito Liberale dell'Ohio. Nel 1848 contribuì a fondare il Free Land Party e reclutò l'ex presidente Martin Van Buren come candidato presidenziale del partito. Chase vinse le elezioni del Senato l'anno successivo e si oppose al Compromesso del 1850 e alla legge Kansas-Nebraska.
