Wayne Shorter ist ein US-amerikanischer Jazzsaxophonist und Komponist. Shorter wurde in den späten 1950er Jahren als Mitglied und schließlich als Lead-Songwriter für Art Blakeys Jazz Messengers bekannt. In den 1960er Jahren trat er dem Second Great Quintet von Miles Davis bei und ist seitdem Mitbegründer der synthetischen Jazzgruppe Weather Report. Als Gruppe hat er über 20 Alben aufgenommen. Shorters zahlreiche Kompositionen sind im Jazz zur Norm geworden und sein Werk hat weltweite Anerkennung, Kritikerlob und verschiedene Auszeichnungen erhalten. Shorter gewann 11 Grammy Awards. Er wurde auch für seine Beherrschung des Sopransaxophons gelobt und trat 1970 als Gewinner der jährlichen Umfrage von Down Beat zu diesem Instrument in eine Dynastie ein und gewann die Kritikerumfrage 10 Jahre in Folge und von 18 Lesern. Die New York Times 2008 Shorter bezeichnete sie als „den größten Jazz-Subgroup-Komponisten und den größten Anwärter auf einen improvisierten lebenden Künstler“. 2017 erhielt er den Polar Music Prize.
