Mary Virginia Terhune, also known as Marion Harland, is a successful and excellent American author in the novel and nonfiction genre. Born in Amelia County, Virginia, she began her journalism career at the age of 14, using a variety of pen marks until 1853, when she settled in Marion Harland. Her first novel Alone was published in 1854 and became "hugely successful" after a second print the following year. For fifteen years she was the author of numerous bestselling women's novels, classified as "plantation novels", as well as many long-standing books, short stories and magazine essays. After marrying Edward Payson Terhune in 1856, Terhune moved with him to Newark, New Jersey and spent the rest of his adult life in the North. They have six children together; Daddy died baby.

She is best known for her novel Alone, published in 1854, and her nonfiction work Common Sense in the Household: A Manual of Practical Housewifery, published in 1871. She also released several collections of short stories.
