He is best known for his writings in the 1930s and 1940s in a deliberately accessible style commonly referred to as "populist" and "native" style by composers. In addition to ballet and orchestral works, he also produces music in a variety of genres, including chamber music, vocal works, musicals, and film soundtracks.
