Her first book, Dog Road Woman, won the American Book Award and was the first to reach finalists for the Paterson Poetry Award and the Diane DeCora Prize. She has since written five more books and edited eight volumes. She is known for dealing with issues of culture, prejudice, indigenous rights, the environment, peace, violence, abuse and work in her poetry and other creative works.
