Aphra Behn
Aphra Behn is an English Renaissance writer, poet, translator, and fiction writer. One of the first British women to make a living writing, she broke cultural barriers and served as a literary role model for later generations of authors. Stepping out from the shadows, she caught the attention of Charles II, who hired her as a spy in Antwerp. After returning to London and possibly spending a short time in the debtors' prison, she began writing for the stage. She belonged to a faction of famous poets and libertines writers such as John Wilmot and Lord Rochester. She wrote under the pen directory Astrea. During the tumultuous political period of the crisis of exclusion, she wrote an epilogue and an opening that left her in legal trouble; after that she devoted most of her work to the prose and translation genres. A staunch supporter of the Stuart line, she refused an invitation from Bishop Burnet to write a poem welcoming the new King William III. She died shortly after.
