Bidhan Chandra Roy MRCP, FRCS is an Indian physician, educator, philanthropist, freedom advocate and politician, serving as Minister of West Bengal from 1948 until his death in 1962. Bidhan Roy is often referred to as the creator of modern West Bengal due to its important role in founding a number of organizations and five famous cities, Durgapur, Kalyani, Bidhannagar, Ashokenagar and Habra. He is one of the few people in history to have the F.R.C.S. and M.R.C.P. simultaneous degree. In India, National Physician Day is celebrated on July 1 every year. He was awarded the Bharat Ratna on February 4, 1961, India's highest civilian title.
