After a transcontinental flight from Long Beach, California, to New York, he flew from Floyd Bennett Field to Brooklyn, New York, Ireland, despite his flight plans. he was submitted to return to Long Plage. He claimed his flight was due to navigation errors, which were caused by dense clouds obscuring landmarks and low light conditions, causing him to misread his compass. However, he is a trained aircraft mechanic and has made some modifications to his own aircraft, in preparation for transatlantic flight. He was denied permission to take a direct flight from New York to Ireland, and his "navigation error" was deemed intentional. However, he never openly admitted that he deliberately flew to Ireland.
