He trained at the Virginia Military Academy, where he met his screenwriter John Cherry Monks Jr. A sequel to the 1940 film titled Brother Rat and a Baby was also produced. Monks and Finklehoffe also wrote the musical MGM, Strike Up the Band. Finklehoffe was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Adaptation Screenplay in 1944 with Irving Brecher for Meet Me in St. Petersburg. Louis.
