James Paul David Bunning is an American professional baseball pitcher and politician who represents Kentucky in both houses of the United States Congress. He is the only baseball player in the Baseball League elected to the United States Senate and the National Baseball Fame Hall. Bunning made his debut from 1955 to 1971 for the Detroit Tigers, Philadelphia Phillies, Pittsburgh Pirates and Los Angeles Dodgers. When Bunning retired he had the second highest number of hits in Major League history; He is currently ranked 19th. As a member of the Phillies, Bunning had the seventh perfect game in Major League Baseball history on June 21, 1964, the first one-on-one on Father's Day at Shea Cave Stadium, with the New York Mets. It was the first time in the National League since 1880. Bunning was presented to the National Baseball Museum and Museum in 1996 after the election of Hall's veterans committee.
