Peggy Whitson
Peggy Annette Whitson is an American biochemist, retired NASA astronaut and former NASA chief astronaut. Her first space mission began in 2002, with her long time on the International Space Station as a member of Expedition 5. Her second mission was performed on October 10, 2007. as the first female commander of the ISS with Expedition 16. She completed a third long space flight and was the commander of the International Space Station for Expedition 51, before handing over command to Fyodor Yurchikhin on June 1, 2017. Space shuttle STS-120, led by astronaut Pam Melroy, is the first time two women have been in command of a mission to fly into orbit at the same time. After completing her eighth EVA in March 2017, Whitson now holds the record for the oldest woman to walk in space and the record for a woman's total number of space walks, was snatched by her after her ninth and tenth EVA in May 2017, overtaking Sunita Williams, who finished seventh.
