James Ambrose Johnson Jr., better known by his stage name Rick James, is an American singer-songwriter, multi-instrumental musician and record producer. Born and raised in Buffalo, New York, James began his music career as a teenager. He joined various groups before joining the US Navy to avoid being drafted into the military. In 1964, James moved to Toronto, Canada, where he formed rock band Mynah Birds, which eventually signed a recording contract with Motown Records in 1966. James' career with the team came to a halt after military authorities found out his whereabouts and ultimately convicted and sentenced James to one year in prison for defection. After his release, James moved to California, where he started a series of rock and funk groups in the late 1960s and early 1970s
