Ruth Lillian Kirschstein is an American pathologist and Scientific Director of the National Institutes of Health. Kirschstein was director of the National Institute of General Medical Sciences, deputy director of NIH in the 1990s, and interim director of NIH in 1993 and 2000-2002. She is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a member of the Institute of Medicine. In 2002, Congress changed the name of the NIH graduate student scholarship program to the Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award in honor of Kirschstein's work at NIH. Although trained as a classical pianist, she pursued a career in medicine, graduating in 1947 at Long Island University and a doctor at Tulane University in 1951. She completed an internship in medicine and surgery. at Kings County Hospital and complete inpatient in pathological medicine. at Providence Hospital in Detroit, Tulane University Hospital and NIH Clinical Center.
