After a lifetime of study with Eastern and Western teachers, primarily Inayat Khan and Nyogen Senzaki, Lewis was simultaneously recognized as a Zen master and Murshid Sufi by Eastern representatives of both traditions. He was also the co-founder of the Christian mystical order known as the Holy Order of Le Mans. His early interests in international seed exchange and organic farming also made him one of the pioneers of green spirituality. Perhaps his most enduring legacy is the creation of the Universal Peace Dances, an early interfaith practice that has grown in popularity around the world in the 50 years since his death.
